My pamangkin on peace

Pamangkins Kakoy, Vina (cousin) and Kuya oren.

While watching Waktu (Cartoon Network) with Kakoy, and Kuya Oren last night. I noticed a girl wearing hijab.

Me: Ah may Muslim oh.

Kakoy: Bad man na sila.

Me: Di ah. Good man na sila.

Kakoy: Good man ko. Muslim ko Kuya Aries?

Peace Education at Home

Kakoy is six years old, but he already uttered  negative comment toward Muslims. I can understand him. The media and his environment must have influenced him.  It’s nothing compared to a 60-year old who says “dapat pulbusin na lang yan sila.”

There’s really a need for peace education programs to saturate the TV and all forms of media. Biases and prejudices are so endemic in our society, both from the Christians and Muslims.

Peace education should be integrated in the telenovelas and kid programs. For example, why not put Muslim character in the Mara Clara or in Mutya with a good character.  How many times could we see characters on television wearing hijab or kupya? Zilch. On this way people will start to become aware of the kindness of the Muslim, slowly erasing the biases.

While the government continues to talk with the MILF to come up with a negotiated political settlement (in which very few understand), the parents, NGO’s, Media, and educational institutions should start educating the kids on peace, and on  loving the Muslims (Christians).

But we have parents who have biases and prejudices? Let’s educate them also.
